I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I was just curious to see if anyone out there has picked up any interesting board games, trading card games, deck building or table top games that they're interested in talking about. This is the place for those I suppose. Feel free to discuss and tell us about your favorites.

As for myself, I'm a fan of Magic: The Gathering. I've been playing myself for a few years and would like to know if anyone out there plays as well. I'd love to bounce off some deck ideas with people, and try to find some interesting deck lists and combo strategies.

I used to play Magic quite a lot, and have recently started to play some more. I have most of the preconstructed decks for the Avacyn Restored set, slightly tweaked with some older cards I still had, plus some goodies from the booster packs that come with the decks.

Cards are crazy powerful nowadays. The new mechanics like Soulbond are cool and all, but they feel gamebreaking in comparison to the older sets I'm used to. Like every deck is flat out designed to end the game in 5 turns or less. That's not the worst I've seen, by far. I remember Hatred decks that could kill on the second turn under the right conditions. Just seems a lot more widespread now.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Compared to some of the older sets, the newer stuff seems to be much faster. I prefer to make decks that take the game a little bit into the longer side. I enjoy a game that lasts about 10-15 turns in, sometimes even more. Those require a much more concentrated plan. Most of my decks aren't designed to be turn 4 win decks, because I'm not a highly competitive player. I like to make decks that have more fun mechanics in mind.

I've got this one green/black/red deck with a creature called Scarland Thrinax.
Spoiler:

I've got him paired with a bunch of cards that make a ton of Saproling tokens, and then I've got Grave Pact in there for the fun part.
Spoiler:

So basically I sacrifice Saprolings to power up Thrinax, and force my opponents to sacrifice creatures. It's quite fun. I've got some other interesting decks too.

Consider Havengul Vampire for that deck.

Spoiler:

In fact, that seems to be the same premise that the Slaughterhouse preconstructed deck is built around. Getting creatures in play and back out asap to beef your creatures or other effects.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I've modified my version by removing several of the creatures and replacing them with ones I think work better. Like a second Havengul Vampire, some Dark Rituals and Culling the Weaks to speed up the more expensive casting costs, a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], and a [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.].

Also just got an [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] that I intend to work in there too. Very Happy= :D

That's a pretty good idea. Thanks Monkey. I'm glad someone else is actually following this thread as well. The good thing about that Grave Pact deck is to keep your opponent's side of the field clear so you've got a giant Thrinax to go rampaging around. Since tokens technically go to the graveyard first, that way Grave Pact triggers and forces your opponent(s) to sacrifice creatures.

With the Avacyn Restored decks, I bought the Red/White intro pack (not sure of the name, because I didn't save the box) and modified that one up a bit. I haven't tested it yet, but I really think I did make some good additions.

Before I continue, how familiar are you with the concept of "Millfolk" there Monkey?

Just familiar enough to google it. Razz
Swarm of small creatures with a side focus on decking the opponent, right? I couldn't find a single definition of Millfolk decks, but the few I looked at seemed to be that way.

That red/white deck is called Fiery Dawn. It's the one I just got most recently.
Fun combo in that deck: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to temporarily take a creature from an opponent, followed by [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] to make your ownership permanent.

This reminds me of Yu-Gi-Oh!

Which I still have like three decks from.. 0.o
One is some ~starts pack~ which has a shitload of powerful creatures in it
and my other two were originally just a bunch of random cards I collected after walking around asking people if they had any unwanted cards Laughing

Well, they're similar in that they're both CCGs. But Magic's been around a liiiiittle bit longer. Laughing

I don't really know anything about that game, so which cards were which would be lost on me.

Yeah, you've hit the nail on the head. I don't have a full decklist for you, but I made a Millfolk deck myself. I'll get it drawn up fairly soon once it's like 100% where I want it.

I played a little Yu-Gi-Oh! ages ago back in like 6th grade, but I got rid of all my cards a long time ago.

Decking has always been one of the more fun ways to win.

This thing used to eviscerate mono-color decks.

That's a cool one. A friend of mine uses Millstone in one of his milling oriented decks. But that thing is just so much better.

Yeah, Millstone is what you get when they realize how much of a monster Grindstone was. It's kinda like a Nerfstone instead. Laughing

Lol totally. I'll get you a complete deck list once I actually get to play test it. There are no incredibly valuable cards in there so if you wanted to build it yourself, it wouldn't cost much.

Oh, yeah. Here's another one you might want to keep an eye out for. Probably a bit easier to find.

Thanks! That's great for another deck I designed. Blue Black control with a bunch of other nasty surprises. I'm using Liliana's Caress in that one, and that would be lovely to pair with it. Liliana's Caress is an enchantment that says whenever an opponent discards a card, that player loses 2 life. I'd link you but I'm posting on my phone right now lol.

Underworld Dreams is in that deck too. Underworld dreams makes an opponent lose one life each time they draw a card.

There's a combo to the Exquisite Blood I mentioned earlier.
Exquisite Blood makes you gain a life for each life your opponent loses.
Sanguine Bond makes your opponent lose a life for each one you gain.
Get them both in play, deal one point of damage/gain one life and it's an infinite damage combo.

That was my initial reaction too, but board games and CCGs don't fit anywhere in there. And I don't think it needs its own category either.
