I actually quite liked the second one. Think Red Dead Redemption. In FPS. In Africa. With cars.

FAR CRY 3 Empty
PostSubject: Re: FAR CRY 3   FAR CRY 3 EmptySat Dec 08, 2012 1:22 pm

Played it beat it, and started a 2nd playthrough.

A lot of people say it is like skyrim with guns. I never really understood why they would say that though. For starters although FC3 takes place in a jungle there is a very distinct lack of bugs. It is a very smooth very polished experience. (at least single player, co-op and MP have some bugs, nothing major though)

I could go on and on about how great it is as a shooter, how nice the weapons (variety) are.how smooth the aiming is, how great the story is, how it does a very good job at 1st person animations (like climbing, fighting off animals etc) how it has one of the best villians in recent video games. (only jack from borderlands really gives him a run for his money, and that is mostly because jack is constantly taunting you throughout the game) But what really makes the game is the craziness. The unscripted things. My friend telling me his is what sold me on the game in the 1st place.

Things like The time I was sneaking around an enemy outpost trying to figure the best way to take them all out without being detected, and I see a tiger walking towards me, and I was just praying and hoping it would leave me alone, please please go away. then it turned and attacked the guards at the outpost. that tiger cleared the outpost for me.

or there are enemies that throw molotov coktails at you, I shot him in the face with a shotgun just as he threw it, he burst into flames, stumbled forward at me, caught me on fire.

Alligators scare the shit out of me everytime. I will be wading through a river, just running doing my thing when all of a suddden *SNAP* my camera gets yanked down to show the alligator attacking me and I need to fight it off. I have never been attacked by one and not jumped a bit despite having it happen to me like 10 times in a row once.

I am afraid to swim in deep waters. even before this game I have a very strong fear of being attacked by sharks or other animals in the water in video games. but this game just takes it to a whole new level. The water is often dark and murky, and the sharks are fast, and you cant use any weapons when your swimming. they come out of no where and attack you. There was this one mission where you had to get to a boat way out at sea. I decided to take a hang glider and glide out to the boat, and skip the water all together. but I was coming in way too high, so I went to dip it down a bit, but I went too far, ended up in the middle of the ocean half way between the boat and land. and I just swam as fast as i could to that boat. made a syringe to speed up my swim speed, and just bee lined it to the boat. the entire time anticipating a shark attacking me, but just praying it wouldnt attack me. I made it safely without incident, but that was one of the most intense moments of my life.

There are a lot more random stuff, but I forgot a lot of them. I'll post more when I remember.

Also while playing this game I cant help but remember what harvey Smith (co creative director for dishonored) said in an interview. "even if I wasn't making a stealth game I would want to design stealth mechanics into the AI" You can play far cry 3 like a stealth game for the most part if you want. but you can also play it very gun ho. (seems to be meant more to be more the latter. but the way the enemies react to you, how they dont just instantly know where you are, it adds a lot to the combat of the game.

Also the bow is a wonderful addition to the game. It is totally optional. You never have to use it, but it is also a really good weapon. It is also a highly skilled weapon. It is not a point and shoot weapon. you need to account for trajectory. the distance and how much to arc it. it is not an easy weapon to use, and because of that I find using it very refreshing. it is just about all I use. So glad they included it. it allows for a very distinct different play style then what you would get otherwise.

FAR CRY 3 Empty
PostSubject: Re: FAR CRY 3   FAR CRY 3 EmptySun Dec 09, 2012 3:21 am

Just had 2 crazy moments.

1st was I was driving a jeep trying to escape some pirates, and I was going really fast, lost control of the vehicle, and it swerved and drove off a bridge into a river. (the way it happened looked like it was straight out of a movie. I couldn't of planned a swerve off the bridge into a river any better then what I accidentally did) so I got out, and swam along the bottom of the river as far as my breath could take me to try to get away from the pirates.

2nd one I was out in the middle of no where collecting an artifact (a collectible) it was at the top of some old ruins. I had to climb up. it was at the very top of a tower. and as soon as I grab it, 3 jeeps full of pirates pull up and get out, and start swarming the area. I start thinking o shit im screwed. But I try to pick as many of them off with the bow as I can without being detected. But I know its not going to end well when all of a sudden out of no where comes a pack of dingos that start attacking the pirates providing me the distraction I need to climb down and get out of there.

Nice !!, I have a few questions before I am completely sold though.

Firstly, how big is the game world in this game ?, secondly, what is there to do outside the main story ?, finally, what's the crafting system like ?

@cobalt Yes cobalt that is in the game that is gameplay footage Razz

Seriously though, that footage shows a normal takedown into a knife throw takedown, Followed by a double death from above. But there are lots more types of takedowns. You can chain takedown any number of enemies in close proximity. while doing a takedown/chain takedown you can press RT (R1 I assume for you guys) to pull a knife from the enemies pocket and throw it at another, or you can press LT to take out his desert eagle and shoot enemies with it, or you could just hit RB (probably R2) to pull the pin on his nade and kick him forward. thats all the different types of "takedowns" but there is also death from above and death from below. for death from above you just jump on an enemy. can take down up to 2 people this way. Death from below is the same except right as your climbing up from a ledge or from the water

not really sure how to explain how big it is. It is pretty damn big. Last night I was planning on taking a boat from one side of the island around to the other, took so damn long I just gave up, There is a fast travel system that works a lot like skyrim. (just open up the map and choose a fast travel location.) also thats just the 1st island there is a 2nd one about the same size as the 1st, maybe a bit smaller.

Outside the main story there is capturing outposts which opens side content, which is anything from hunting challenges where you are supposed to go to a certain location use the weapon there to kill a certain type of animal. could be anything from hunting dogs with an RPG, to sniping deer, to killing bear with an SMG to hunting tigers with a flamethrower, all sorts of crazy stuff. Then there is the wanted dead missions. basically there is a group of enemies and a leader in an area and you have to kill the leader with a knife. these are my favorite. the hunting and the wanted dead are the main 2 side missions you get a lot of those. but there is also supply drops where you have to drive a vehicle to a destination in a certain amount of time, there are also lots of mini games where you can bet various amounts of cash. they range from races around the island, to knife throwing challenges, to shooting challenges, or even poker. There are also collectibles. there is various types there is relics (getting enough can get you 2 very awesome syringe recipes, one makes you invulnerable for a short time, the other makes you kill in 1 hit) there are also WWII letters, picking this up fills in back story on what was going on on the island during WWII. There is also just tons and tons of loot chests. then there is also hunting animals which you can either sell for money or use for crafting.

The crafting system is basically just hunting. You need X amount of skins of a certain animals to upgrade carrying capacity. all sorts of things from a bigger wallet, to more weapons (you start with only 1, but you can get the animals to upgrade your gear to 4 very early) or more ammo of various types. You'll need to hunt all sorts of animals, from deer, and bear, to tigers and sharks.

EDIT: I forgot 2 things. 1st is radio towers. basically they are like AC's view points. The radio towers have signal jammers at the top you need to deactivate, once you do that a section of your map opens up you can see all the details on the map now. and when you are at the top you can take a zipline down.

the 2nd thing is hunting/crafting. to get the final upgrade for each pouch type you will need the skin from a rare animal. there are unique hunting challenges where you have to hunt a rare version of a certain animal and you have to use the bow to do so.

PostSubject: Re: FAR CRY 3   FAR CRY 3 EmptyFri Dec 21, 2012 9:12 pm

there was a patch released for the game. wont bother posting it because I dont think anyone else has the game, so it would be a bunch of meaningless stuff, with a few spoilers mixed in.

most of the patch was for the MP (the single player in general is very smooth and polished, but the MP is a bit buggy, so a lot of the patch was fixing various misc bugs with the MP) then there was several fixes for glitched missions, as well as a few other rare but serious issues. but this patch seems to of covered everything that was an issue before.

PostSubject: Re: FAR CRY 3   FAR CRY 3 EmptyMon Jan 07, 2013 6:03 am

I arrived on the second island today as well. I'm going for another platinum trophy and well on track, only a few more letters and memory cards and that'll be the collectibles done, less than 10 outposts to liberate and less than 10 skills to learn.

I personally think this was the best game last year, possibly even better than Borderlands 2 for me. Its sad that it didn't show up at the VGA's because this is GOTY material, I haven't played the walking dead but FC3 is, in my opinion, a much superior game than Journey which got a few GOTY awards from major sites.

Got the platinum trophy for this last night, great game and the trophies being easy allowed me to not grind anything really, I could just enjoy the game without worrying about missable trophies.

I will probably have a review up in the next few days, hint, it will be getting a good score, I should review some more mediocre games Razz .
