PostSubject: Ping test   Fri Oct 30, 2009 4:58 pm

We all know the effect a poor 'ping' has on your video gaming experience. Up till now most of us have been relying on speedtest.net to find our ping level. However, Speedtest is more aimed at measuring up/down transfer speeds and its ping measure is very crude. I just saw though that they have added a service: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] which gives you a detailed analysis of your ping settings by showing alongsie the raw ping the packet loss and jitter figures. These are then combined to give an overall line quality measure together with an indication of how this will affect your online gaming experience.

Here's the test I just ran:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Make sure you run it a few times on one server then a few times on a couple more servers to get an idea of your overall performance. Also, bear in mind that the connection you get to the PSN servers will differ again.

In addition to the raw test results shown above it gives you buttons to press to learn more about each aspect of the connection enabling you to get some really detailed information.

Highly recommended. Enjoy.

Explains why I always die so easily in a party full of American players, using an American server. Sad

But how do you know it puts you on a US server? Don't you get put on your local PSN server which then shares data between the other PSN servers?

I always assumed it went with the majority and routed through the nearest server best able to handle the load. Whenever it's been a party of euros with one American it's been the opposite... Even King--- got owned so bad he wanted to quit once. Shocked

Under your results there is a button labelled "Forum link"... Click that to put the image in your clipboard, then open up this thread and right-click and paste it into your post. Wink

That is miserable. How do ISPs get away with that kind of service.

Here is mine.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I recently changed my ISP. With the old one my Ping was 218ms. I was suffering from lag in every game, including the U2 beta. Since I changed my ping has been in the low thirties and even goes to 29 at times. I don't seem to get lag now on the actual game. Might be worth going to a shooter for a while to see does performance improve.

It may also be the college firewall installed, Bandy, I remember testing my Ps3 on Speedtest once and it went from about 400ms to 30 something when I switched the Trend-micro security application off. Wink

I'm not suggesting that you try and turn it off in some way, just that it may not all be down to BitTorrenting. Very Happy= :D

well unless they turn off the firewall after about 1130 at night on week days im going to guess its something to do with people turning off their comps at night freeing up bandwidth Razz
