Most people I know learned to play the guitar by starting with Nirvana songs. Most of them, if not all of them are just a couple of chords and fairly easy to learn.

There's also a ton of computer software and websites that show basics.

Before diving in to playing songs the first and most important thing to learn is how to tune the guitar.
If you have that down then by all means.

The truth is taking lessons would be the best way to learn. Not to show you what to do, but to show you what bad habits not to start.
Nothing wrong with self teaching though.
My brother who pees and poos music self taught himself and he really is a good guitarist.
Well, good musician. He's self taught himself a lot of instruments.

Sayberleigh,

This is another one of those threads that escapes you when it's written, but you find it about two or three weeks later. I just wanted to add a few things, and I hope you get to read it. The single biggest piece of advise I could give you is to learn to read music. It is such a vital skill to any musician, but guitarists in particular tend to neglect it. If someone takes up piano or violin, sight reading is a mandatory element of their development.

Six is absolutely right about taking lessons, because not only will it weed out bad habits, but you will have someone to give feedback to if you find you are struggling. That and the encouragement you get when you inevitably hit low points, makes the money spent a good investment.

Back to the skills. There are three vital areas in learning an instrument, and they compliment each other. The more of these skills you can master, the better player you will become. The three skills are:

1) Technique. Strength in wrist and fingers is crucial. Obviously the more you practice the better you will get at this. There are numerous exercises that can be used to achieve your goals. Practising scales is one of the best ways.

2) Ear training. The value of having the ability to hear music and know what key it is in is a huge advantage. Again practice exercises for this.

3) Sight Reading. I cannot emphasise enough how important this most neglected part of music is. I believe it is of huge importance to all instruments, but the guitarist in particular can take advantage of being able to read music. Why? Because the guitar is the most versatile of all instruments. What I mean by that is that few instruments have the range of the guitar. The same note can be found in anything up to five different places on the fingerbosrd. If you can know your instrument so well as to know where to find all these variarions, the sky is the limit.

By being able to read music and knowing the fingerboard, you have it nailed. This opens up the ability to be able to arrange songs yourself. It also means you won't need to buy costly books with tablature. You can buy the single sheet of music, or download it. Good ear training, coupled with sight reading will mean you could pick it up from the CD yourself. I know it seems like a lot to take in now, but these are the areas you should concentrate on to succeed. After that there is no limit to what you can achieve if you believe. Hope all goes well for you.

Don't forget to wrap up your fingers for long jam sessions unless you like bloody and caloused fingers.

You know, that is my next "New Year's resolution", after I manage to quit smoking completely (so after I stop thinking about cigs).
I have a guitar since 2004, well had two. I had to leave my first one at the airport when I came to UK because it was in a soft case and they did not take it, my only option was to take it with me in the plane, but I had the laptop as hand luggage so choosing between the two, I left the guitar.
My bf bought me a new one... and it is still there in its case pale I really want to learn, but everytime I start it hurts my fingers sooooo muuuuuuch that I end up "having a break", and the break just goes like forever. Neutral
So I haven't passed the point where you know all the notes, you make some noise, you do some bits here and there... but you still cannot play a whole song or even be creative with it.

Now I was thinking about learning on my own when he is not at home, and give him a nice surprise at the end of the year or so, and play for him in an special occasion... so I am determined to learn to play some songs at least within the next 12 months. Very Happy= :D

Learn about the anatomy of songs too. You will find that most songs are based on the I-IV-V chords (e.g. C, F, G) and often the relative minors (IIm, IIIm, VIm) are used as substitutions for the major chords (e.g, in the key of C, instead of an F-G ending you would often see Dm7-G as Dm is the relative minor of F, and Dm is the IIm chord in the key of C. So, in the key of C expect songs to use C, F, G, Dm, Em, Am. Learning to spot the anatomy of a rock song and memorising the most common chord progressions will make it much easier for you to learn new songs as well as working out songs when you don't have a chord sheet/lead sheet.

eatty... i had to read that twice LOL
i cant speak 'guitar' yet xD

my fingers hurt so bad too Sad
i got Ernie Ball Super Slinky guitar strings.. so they are easier for mah noobishness.. but yeah...
i played for like 2 hours yesterday Smile
and my fingers were so damn sore after that.. and super red too Sad
but not nearly as bad as when i first started last September.. on my birthday if i remember.. they were like.. burning pale

Im trying to learn all the basic chords.. and then the ones that go really well with them in their progression thingo... Smile
still cant do 'F'
or any 'barre' (idk if thats what they are called?) chords.. cuz my fingers arent that smart Razz

and i just thought of a popular song i really like.. and then i checked out the tabs and chord sheet.. blah blah blah on ultimate guitar Smile
friggin love that website Wink

so yeah
oh and Marty Schwartz on youtube. AMAZING teacher. Smile

aha.. my mum was super proud of me Smile
shes like... requesting me to learn all these Elvis songs.. because she is a massive Elvis fan.. so yeah.. and then she will no doubt make me play for my aunty.. Rolling Eyes
ahaha

Practise makes perfect Razz
