PostSubject: The 8 Bit Battle   Tue Apr 07, 2009 9:35 am

When the 8 bit systems hit store shelves one thing was clear. Not only was the video game industry given a second chance, but it was about to evolve into something far greater than even its creators could fore see.
Licensing rights were a bit more protected, but that didnt stop every Tom Dick and Harry from making a game.
The nes alone housed nearly 800 titles.

In those games we met many heroes and villains.
Tons of NPCs and PCs filled the stories that helped pave the way to what is the era we are in now.
Who were the coolest? Who were the most bad a$$ed? Who were the worse? Who should have had their own game?

With these questions in mind I have decided to create

The 8 Bit Battle

Once a week two characters from the classic consoles will duke it out for title of winner in the 8 bit battle.
What does this have to do with you?

Well, just as some of you controlled their fate as they fought hordes of robots, monsters or zombies, once again you play a vital role in deciding their outcome. Choose who you want. But choose wisely. Votes should be made by the character, not your feelings on the game itself.
Polls will run once week.
In time, I may have a 'best of' where previous winners are matched against one another.
So that's it. Any questions or ideas..pm me right away.
Battles will show on post 2.
With out further delay...........

Lets get ready to ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumble!!

Previous winners
Mega Man Best Helmeted Hero
Simon Belmont Best undead Slayer

The Third 8 bit Battle

In the 8 bit days games were not only shoot, punch, jump... predictable, they were not exactly as socially oriented as today.
Most games left you facing off against the system aka "the computer" who relentlessly "cheated" just to ensure your epic failz. It was faster than you, it knew the game inside and out, it was programed to read it, and it knew how to play it. It also knew how to cheat. The only thing that kept you going was the ultimate high score. The bragging rights to beating the game..etc.

And then came Spy vs. Spy

Rumored to be the first ever multiplayer split screen game, Spy vs. Spy allowed you to take on the roll of either one of two spies who only mission was to destroy the other. Better yet, your friend also got to assume your opposing role, and as all we all know, what better way is there to tell a friend you care about them than by owning them in a video game. The only real question there was to face in this land of booby traps and fuse bombs was.....which color do you want to be?

Buckle up people. Because the 8 bit battle has returned.

Its beginnings

Spy vs. Spy was created by Antonio Prohias, a Cuban national who fled to the United States in 1960 days before Fidel Castro took over the Cuban free press. The wordless black and white comic strip cartoon was symbolic of the Cold War, and was Prohías's comment on the futility of armed escalation and détente.

In 1961 Mad Magazine began publishing the stories of these two arch rivals.

A game was first published by First Star Software in 1984 for the Atari 8-bit family, Commodore 64 and Apple II computers. It was later ported to a much wider range of platforms including the ZX Spectrum, Acorn Electron, Atari ST, BBC Micro, Commodore 16, MSX, Amstrad CPC, Amiga, Master System, Game Boy, xbox, Game Boy Color and Nintendo Entertainment System, which was emulated to the Game Boy Advance. The NES version will be re-released on the Wii's Virtual Console in Europe in the near future.

The Spies

Employed by the embassies of two nations and identical except for the color of their uniforms, the Spies battle against each other with a variety of complicated (sometimes ridiculously so) weapons, machines and props. The victor alternated roughly every other comic, and neither spy is portrayed as good or evil since both of them are equally ruthless towards each other. Even though they are pretty much identical, their habits and jobs aren't exactly the same:

The White Spy
The White spy is sort of a scientist, as in a good number of strips he's creating weapons and projects for his agency.
In the comics White rarely uses guns or melee weapons to kill his enemy.

The Black Spy
The Black spy is much more of an infiltrator, as he often tries to steal the aforementioned plans. He's also a master of disguise, relying much more on deception, and heavy weapons.

Who was your favorite?
And maybe discuss why here in the thread.

And now....
Let the battle begin!

I might be wrong, but I think this poll closes today guys.
Votes, even if made with little interest, should be cast today.
Sometime tonight, I will change the category.

Well, I don't understand what's going on and I could never understand anything Ronald Reagan did as president so I put two and two together and came up with Reaganomics as the answer, only it isn't one of the options. Did you forget to put it in the poll accidentally, or are you just plain evil?

Actually Ghosts and Goblins had 3 sequels itself but under a different name.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts for the arcades in 1988, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts for the SNES in 1991, and Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins for the PSP in 2006.

The original Ghosts and Goblins was actually an arcade game before any "console" picked it up.

I'm guessing ET never had a Nintendo eh?

In the 1970s I had one of those black and white TV games that played pong. In 1980 I had one of those generic cartridge video game systems that WASN'T the Atari 2600 I actually wanted. Then in 1983 I bought a BBC Model B micro computer. In 1989 I bought a 286 PC. in 1990 I bought a 386-SX-16 PC In 1992 I bought a 486 DX-40 PC. In 1996 I bought an AMD 266 MHz PC. In 2003 I bought a 2.6 GHz P4.

In around 2002 my dad gave us an old PS1 he had in the house for his grand kids to play with. That was the first games console I had in my house since 1980. Then in 2007 we bought the PS3. you could say I missed out on the whole middle of the console thing. I was there at the beginning and I'm here again for the 3rd Gen.
